I. Types of Visas

Here are types of visa defined in "Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act"("ICRRA",「出入国管理及び難民認定法」).

ICRRA defines visa status in two groups.

Group I is a category for "activities visa".

Group II is a category for "resident visa".

Group I is also divided into five tiers.

A. Tier I of Group I

"Diplomat"「外交」

"Public Business"「公用」

"Professor"「教授」

"Artist"「芸術」

"Religious Activities"「宗教」

"Journalist"「報道」

Tier II of Group I

"High Skilled Professional" *「高度専門職」

"Business Manager"「経営・管理」

"Lawyer / Accountant"「法律・会計」

"Medical Care"「医療」

"Researcher"「研究」

"Instructor"「教育」

"Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services"「技術・人文知識・国際業務」

"Intra-company Transferee"「企業内転勤」

"Nursing Care"「介護」

"Entertainer"「興行」

"Skilled Labor"「技能」

"Specified Skilled Worker"* 「特定技能」

"Technical Intern Trainee "*「技能実習」

* "High Skilled Professional", "Specified Skilled Worker" and "Technical Intern Trainee" have subtypes.

Tier III of Group I

"Cultural Activities"「文化活動」

"Short Term Stay"「短期滞在」

Tier IV of Group I

"Student"「留学」

"Trainee"「研修」

"Dependent"「家族滞在」

Tier V of Group I

"Designated Activities"「特定活動」

Group II

"Permanent Resident"「永住者」

"Spouse or Child of Japanese National"「日本人の配偶者等」

"Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident"「永住者の配偶者等」

"Long Term Resident"「定住者」

II. With Which Visa Is It Possible to Work in Japan

For any visa holder of "Tier I", "Tier II" or "Tier V" of "Group I", it is prohibited to receive wages or to operate business which shall make incomes in Japan from except for the permitted activities for each visa, unless it is permitted by the head of the immigration services agency of Japan to be engaged in activities other than permitted under the current visa status in accordance with ICRRA and the related regulations.

In other words, it is allowed to work or to operate commercial business in Japan with any visa in "Tier I", "Tier II" or "Tier V" of "Group I", within the permitted activities for each visa.

For any visa holder of "Tier III" or "Tier IV" of "Group I", it is basically prohibited to receive wages or to operate business which shall make incomes, unless it is permitted by the head of the immigration services agency of Japan to be engaged in activities other than permitted under the current visa status in accordance with ICRRA and the related regulations.

There are no restrictions on activities of any visa in "Group II", because each visa in this group shall be permitted not for expected activities but for a relation or a position.

It is principally free to work or to operate commercial business in Japan for who stays with any visa in "Group II"
