"Researcher" Visa

"Researcher" visa is categorized in Tier II of Group I defined in Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act ("ICRRA", hereafter). 

I. Granted Activities 

activities of research under contracts with public or private institutions in Japan, other than activities of  "Professor"

II. Granted Period of Stay 

5 years, 3 years, 1 year or 3 months

III. Conditions to be Permitted 

A. Applied activities are not false. 

B. Applied activities coincide with activities defined for each visa in ICRRA.

It is also required to meet the followings, or so called " Criteria of Permits for Landing" as "Medical Care" is categorized in Tier II of Group I:

A. The applicant should correspond to each of the following, provided that this shall be excluded, if the applicant is willing to engaged in the business of research under a contract with the central government, a local government, an institution directly established by a law, an institution established by a special act with a special establishment process,  an institution established by a special act and also required to get permission for the establishment or an independent administrative institution, or if the applicant is willing to be engaged in the business under a contract with an institution which is operated by funds from the central government, a local government or a independent administrative institution and which is designated by a notice of the minister of justice:

a) The applicant should have obtained a master degree or experienced research for more than three years including terms studying in a graduate school on the research field which the applicant is willing to be engaged in, 

after the applicant graduated a college other than a junior college,

had the education the same as or higher grade than education in colleges, or

graduated a specialized school in Japan completing a designated program by a notice of the minister of justice.

otherwise, the applicant should have experienced research for more than ten years including terms of studying in a college on the research field which the applicant is willing to be engaged in,

provided that this shall be excluded, if the applicant who is an employee of an overseas office which is belonging to a pubic or private institution which has a head office or a branch office in Japan is willing to be engaged in the business of research after transferred with a limitation of term, and 

if the applicant have been engaged in the business of research which is defined as the activities of the visa status "Researcher" by ICRRA, in a head office, branch office or other office in overseas, just before the transfer for one year or more including the term when the applicant was engaged in the business at an office in Japan with a visa status "Researcher". 

b) The applicant should receive the same wages as Japanese can receive or more.  

IV. Documents Required to Apply for a Certificate of Eligibility or Change of Visa

A. the following, if to be engaged in business of research under contracts with public or private institutions in Japan
(a) a material which clarifies the summary of the accepting institution
(b) a certificate of a degree and a document which clarifies the career and other record of the applicant
(c) a material which certifies the contents, terms, the position, wages of the activities
B. the following, if an employee of an overseas office of a public or private institution which has headquarters, branches or other offices in Japan, shall be transferred from an oversea office to an office in Japan with limited terms of stay in Japan and engaged in research business at the office
(a) a document which shows the relation between the oversea office previously worked for and the domestic office to be transferred into
(b) a certificate of registration of the domestic office, a copy of income statements and a material which clarifies the contents of the business
(c) a document which certifies the contents of the job and the terms of working at the oversea office and a same kind of document at a domestic office, if the applicant has stayed in Japan and worked for a domestic office under eligibility of research within one year before of the transfer
D. a certificate of registration of the oversea office and a material which clarifies the summary of the oversea office
E. a document which certifies the contents, terms, the position and wages of the activities
F. a certificate of a degree and a document which certifies the career

V. Documents Required to Apply for Extension of Visa

A. a document which certifies the contents, terms and the position of the activities

B. a certificate of annual incomes and paid taxes
